The Multimedia BCF Comics!

By david ~ December 22nd, 2008. Filed under: Music, comics, webcomics.

Many people ask me, “David, which BCF comics are the ones with all the multimedia goodness in them?”

Well, I’m god damn glad you asked.

There are many, and it can be daunting to try to guess from the beautiful list of (currently) 75 comics which ones might be the absolutely stunning multimedia ones that you’ve heard about in the news lately.  Which reminds me - maybe I should post them to reddit.com or something.

Salsa Pirate and Pepper:

If you’re ever in Fredericksburg, Texas, wander down the center of town and you’re sure to spot the Salsa Pirate and Pepper.   There’s some kind of garlic guy and one other animatronic thing too; I can’t remember what it is - but it’s no Salsa Pirate.  Nor is it Pepper.

  • Salsa Pirate & Pepper #1 song! - Salsa Pirate & Pepper song #1!  An introduction… in a vaguely Gilbert & Sullivan-esque kind of way… and I stress vaguely
  • Salsa Pirate & Pepper #2 - not a multimedia extravaganza, per se, but part of the continuing saga of the Salsa Pirate and Pepper…
  • Salsa Pirate & Pepper #3 song - The Salsa Pirate & Pepper sing about the fact that they are, in fact, here.  Also, a repurposing of a theme song I did for a play.
  • Salsa Pirate & Pepper #4 - also not technically a multimedia one, but another part of their continuing saga… perhaps the concluding chapter; time will only tell… although if anyone’s ever going to Fredericksburg, Texas, I could for sure use some more pictures of these guys!  I love them…

The “Weird Dutch (?) Painting” Comics:

Does anyone know what painting these are from?  It was hanging in our old studio and so hey why not I did a bunch of comics on it.  Not all are multimedia, but #1 is and I’ll add all the others below for completeness’ sake.  To enjoy the saga as it developed:

“Listen While You Read” Comics:

The music relates to the comics, but isn’t, you know, part of the comic in the same way.  Different.  But fun and useful.  Makes the comic just sing! And I think we all learned a lot.

David takes you around a park in San Francisco:

Intended to be part of a series.  We’ll see what happens, and what mysterious lay in wait for you, intrepid reader.  Still to come: a dream-date with David, more ‘David as your tour guide’ fun, and who knows what else.  Stay tuned…

DVD Commentary comic:

No doubt we will get more of these.  Because they are easy to make.  Why do you think this is such a common “feature” of DVDs?  Cheap and easy.  Cheap and easy.

Misc:

And finally, the ever-terrifying, and yet so-very-true “Billy Joel Hole” video link comic:

  • Billy Joel Hole - ooooh… spoooooky… as mysterious and dangerous as a tiger shark shooting coyotes out of a watermelon gun, that wily Billy Joel is. Hopefully, the next administration can catch him, since the Bush administration has failed in their promise to stop this man from wreaking his sucking havoc on the world!

Well that’s all the glory I have for you today.  And if you need more, there’s a whole big (at time of writing) 75-comic strong archive to meander through.  Who knows why.  And more coming soon, though probably not before the new year hits… we’ll see.

I Am Not Really Woman, Personally. But maybe sort of.

By david ~ December 15th, 2008. Filed under: Music, Superman, geek, magic, religion.

Hi everyone.  Welcome to the blog.  I’ll give more of a justification for its existence later.  But part of it is just as a nice place to post some things I find around the internet that I want to have a nice convenient place to store for later perusal.

Which is another way to say that I want to post these links just because I like them:

First of all, let’s consider Dusty Springfield doing “I Am Woman:”

Now, I’d seen Helen Reddy do that song originally, and I thought to myself - hey myself, so that’s the song people had been referring to all those years when they referred to some sort of “I Am Woman” song!  And I was all into it.  And then I saw Dusty Springfield doing it, and she kind of just blew poor Helen Reddy out of the water.  Damn.  I’m not woman, but Dusty makes me think that maybe I am, sort of.  Just a bit.

And although the song really is over-everythinged- in that “Me and Bobby McGee” kind of way (though mostly because of Pulp Fiction, but still) - Dusty doing “Son of a Preacher Man” live is also quite a cause for celebration.

Somewhat unrelatedly, this song, also - “Ode to Billie Joe” by Bobbie Gentry -  is one hot potato of a great listen.  With one of those kind of “Paul is Deadmysterious backstories that could only become the public fodder it became in the late 60’s and 70’s.  Something, you know, in the air.

Moving forward:

Yeah, THIS is how to run a church.  Damn right.   And I love the Superman theme.  John Williams, damn you for your pomp and situation.

And finally, a Van De Graaff Levitation Wand. Just in time for awesome.

Well, it’s pretty cool anyway.  Probably gets old fast, but I bet it’s neat for that first 15 minutes.

Connective tissue?  We don’t need no connective tissue.  Not around here.

So, what’ve we learned?  Music, religion, and magickal scientific explosions of superness.  And that’s just today.  Okay then.

And thanks, Julie!  You’re awesome; you did an amazing job shoehorning this dang thing in here.
